Who Are Utah’s Health Insurance Providers?
Currently there are fives major health insurance providers operating in the state of Utah: Humana, Select Health, Altius Health, Assurant Health, and Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield. Each one of these Utah health insurance providers has it’s own niche that it fills in the Utah health insurance marketplace. Each one of the fives carriers mentioned above are covered below in more detail.
HumanaOne Health Insurance of Utah
HumanaOne is one of the largest health insurance companies in the country. They are based out of Louisville, Kentucky and are one of the nation's largest publicly traded health benefits companies, with over 11 million medical members.
They offer a number of different types of plans here, and have a very large PPO network of doctors and facilities that you can choose from. Here is a list of things that sets HumanaOne apart from other providers here:
•Large National Network - Nationally, their network has 540,000 doctors and providers, over 4,000 hospitals and 60,000 pharmacies. In Utah, most doctors (unless specifically a IHC doctor) are an in network provider for Humana. That means that you have the freedom to keep your current doctor here in Utah, but also receive great treatment while travelling out of state.
•Plan Portability - Because they have a nationwide network, if you had to move out of Utah for some reason, your current coverage could go with you. That is unlike most other carriers here and is very important if you had a current health condition that you couldn't get coverage for with a new carrier. Since the coverage would travel with you, you wouldn't have to be underwritten again.
•Health Insurance Plan Variety - They offer many different types of plans to suit your needs. They offer consumer driven health plans (also know as health savings account plans or HDHP), traditional copay plans, plans that have certain limits to them but that save on monthly premiums and also what they call their Utah Basic Plan. We will go into more detail on their plans later, but they also give you the ability to add in life insurance, dental insurance and supplemental accident insurance.
Currently HumanaOne has some of the most aggressively priced medical insurance plans in Utah with some of the best coverage. You will find that their plans have great preventive or wellness coverage, most times covered without meeting your deductible. On the plans that offer prescription coverage, they have possibly the strongest coverage of any provider in the state. And by being to add in dental and accident insurance, you cannot go wrong.
Assurant Health is a company that offers competitively priced high deductible health plans to Utah residents. They have a history of excellent financial ratings through AM Best and continue to offer quality plans to individuals and families in the state of Utah.
The most unique thing about Assurant Health in Utah is that they are the only company in the Utah market with the ability to issue a plan with "condition-specific deductibles". This can be a huge benefit to someone who has been denied Utah health insurance by Blue Cross of Utah, SelectHealth, Altius, HumanaOne, or another Utah insurer. Being able to issue a "condition specific deductible" with a plan allows Assurant Health to offer coverage to many Utah residents who have been denied. In the past, the best option was the Health Insurance Pool of Utah (HIPUtah). Assurant is now able to cover a percentage of those people who would have normally gone to HIPUtah (the state insurance pool).
Rate Guarantees
On top of that, Utah Assurant offers Utah residents a 24 or 36 month rate guarantee on many of their plans, so your rate won't go up every single year. This is unique to plans in the Utah market, and Assurant is the only company that currently offers this extra protection.
Decreasing Deductible
Another concept that is unique to Assurant in the Utah market is the "decreasing deductible". This allows residents to purchase a plan with a deductible that decreases by 10% for every six month period the insured does not completely meet their deductible.
Assurant Health's Network Options
Assurant offers three high quality large doctor networks to its Utah members; Great-West Open Access Network, Private Healthcare Systems, and First Health Network. This allows members to choose from multiple reliable and well know Mountain Star hospitals and independent doctors. In addition, Assurant Health's networks stretch nationwide, in case you need medical care while out of Utah. Assurant Health also makes it easy for Utah residents to take their plan with them, if the insured moves out of state.
SelectHealth is the insurance company spin off for Intermountain Healthcare or as most of us call it IHC. So, in discussing SelectHealth, we are also going to have to go into some detail about IHC as well. But first, let's discuss the insurance company.
SelectHealth is a non-profit organization that has been around for more than 25 years. They are the largest insurance provider in the state and they cover over 30% of the families here. In conjunction with IHC, they provide what they term it as an integrated healthcare system and have won numerous awards for customer satisfaction and innovation. The model for their system has been duplicated across the country as states attempt to reform their healthcare systems.
SelectHealth is also the singular in-network provider for all IHC hospitals and facilities. What does that mean to you? If you live near an IHC hospital and you want to be treated there, the only coverage you can get that will cover your treatment in-network and for the lowest cost, will be if you have SelectHealth coverage. If you have coverage by another insurance provider, you can still be treated there, but it will generally cost you much more than if you had SelectHealth coverage. And since IHC has the most facilities in the state (34 hospitals and 3,700+ physicians) this is something you need to know. One thing to remember though, is that just because a doctor is an IHC doctor, doesn't necessarily mean that he does not accept other networks, it's that you may need to find another facility near by to get treatment if you have different coverage
Altius Health Plans is a privately held Utah company that provides Utah health insurance benefits for more than 160,000 members through a large network of community hospitals and physicians. Altius Health care offers a number of products that include HMO, point of service (POS), dental, and vision options. There are three different Altius Health insurance plans for individuals and families. To find out more about each plan, request a quote or contact us. Over 2,900 physicians are associated with Utah Altius insurance plans:
Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield of Utah
Blue Cross Blue Shield has service areas that covers the entire state of Utah with the Traditional and Regence ValueCare networks. The Regence HealthWise service area consists of the Wasatch Front. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Utah is the state’s largest insurer. Their products and plans include Individual, Group, Medicare Supplement and Life & Disability. The company’s operating expense ratio – 9.3 percent – is one of the lowest in the nation among health insurers.
The company was founded in 1942 as Utah’s first health insurance carrier when six hospitals formed the Intermountain Hospital Plan (IHP). Two years later, a physicians’ group began an active sales campaign with IHP to offer both physician and hospital benefits. Within two years there were 100,000 enrollees. By 1966, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Utah was the administrator for Medicare Parts A and B. In 1982, It later developed HealthWise, one of Utah’s first HMOs. In 1984, the ValueCare PPO network was created. The company experienced rapid enrollment growth in the 1990s. In 2002, the company launched BlueChoicesSM, a new suite of products unlike any option ever introduced in the Utah market. BlueChoices is a consumer-directed suite of products that has proven to be the most successful and fastest growing offering ever for the company.
Blue Cross Plans:
Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield of Utah offers three plans; BlueBasic (70% coverage), BlueAdvantage (80% coverage), and the Regence HSA Health Plan. To find out more about each plan, download the Utah brochure, request a quote, or contact us. You can also use hospitals that are out-of-network.
